It’s official. Both Disneyland and Walt Disney World theme parks have been closed for a month. It’s the first time in both resorts history to be closed longer than 48 hours, let alone a month, due to anything other than weather. The shutdown has caused such a stir for Disney that they brought back recently “retired” CEO Bob Iger to rally a comeback from the COVID-19 damage.
So what’s currently happening with “The Happiest Place’s on Earth?” Here’s what you need to know:
- Disney has brought back Bob Iger in hopes of recovering what they’ve lost (approximately $30 million a day). Recently named CEO Bob Chapek will take a back seat position until Bob’s work is done.
- Disney will be furloughing over 40,000 employees come April 19th. Anyone deemed non-essential who is also not part of a union will fall under this action. Furloughed employees will still receive health benefits covered by Disney.
- Construction has come to a halt at both resorts including the highly anticipated Avengers Campus land at Disney California Adventure Park, which was slated to open in July. No announcements have been made concerning new opening dates for any existing projects.
- Disney has been allowing guests to book theme park vacations starting June 1st and on. While no official opening dates have been announced for either resort, guests are banking on June 1st as the day. Anyone who has reservations before June 1st can hold them until an official date is announced.
- Disney is currently offering guests who’s vacations were cancelled due to COVID-19 refunds on packages and hotels. They are also offering a free dining plan to Walt Disney World guests who rebook and travel by Sept. 2020.
