Earthquake Strikes Near Disneyland, Temporarily Closing Rides

At approximately 8:10pm on Monday, December 4th, a 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck about 2 miles north of Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The epicenter was located in Fullerton, causing light to moderate shaking that was felt by guests at the Disneyland Resort. While there were no injuries or damage reported, the earthquake caused Disneyland officials to temporarily close the majority of rides at both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure as a safety precaution.

Cast members conducted safety checks and inspections before reopening each attraction, a process that took 1-2 hours for most rides. At Disneyland Park, popular attractions like Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain, Matterhorn Bobsleds and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance were among the 35 rides closed. Only Jungle Cruise and Mad Tea Party remained open during the inspection period. Over at Disney California Adventure, all but 3 rides were shut down, including flagship attractions Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster and Soarin’ Around the World.

The only rides continuously operating were Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, Mickey’s PhilharMagic and Luigi’s Joy to the Whirl. Park visitors described feeling a single, sharp jolt from the quake. Some guests in queues or on rides during the temblor said it felt very real and intense. Others were thankful the earthquake was minor, with no significant damage across the Disneyland Resort. By around 10pm, after thorough safety checks by cast members, the majority of rides at both theme parks had reopened and were operational again. The earthquake serves as a reminder that Disney has extensive protocols in place to ensure guest safety during seismic activity.
